The White-bellied Heron (WBH) Ardea insignis is the world’s second largest heron and one of the most threatened birds. In India, the WBH occurs in the states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. However, there are significant gaps in understanding the bird’s potential range in India.

Our project, implemented under The Himalaya Initiative, focuses on Changlang, Lohit and Anjaw districts of Arunachal Pradesh. We aim to conduct extensive searches and surveys in prioritized potential sites, monitor two known locations, and engage with the public to promote stewardship for the conservation of this species. By documenting anthropogenic activities, we can better understand the potential threats to the White-bellied Heron and its habitats. This knowledge will enable us to collaborate with stakeholders to mitigate these threats in key habitat areas for the species
