ONE Map

NEW ONEs Map

Open natural ecosystems make up more than 10% of India’s geographical area. ATREE mapped the extent of India’s Open Natural Ecosystems, coining this term to include often overlooked natural ecosystems such as savanna grasslands, deserts, rocky outcrops and shrub lands that sustain people, biodiversity and carbon storage.

The ONE Map is designed by Sudarshan Shaw in his unique folk Indica style in collaboration with ATREE.

Open natural ecosystems host a variety of magnificent biodiversity. They are home to the Indian Grey Wolf, the Striped Hyena, Indian Gazelle as well as a range of birds such as the Great Indian Bustard, the Lesser Florican, the Rain quail, the Indian Courser to name a few. Less than 5% of the  ONE falls under India’s protected area network. They support the livelihoods of numerous pastoralist communities and are integral to India’s rich socio-ecological heritage.
The ONE Map was unveiled by K. Venkatesh, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Sericulture, Government of Karnataka at the Living Lightly Festival 2025.
