Postdoctoral Research Associate: GIS and Remote Sensing, Ecoinformatics Lab

ATREE is a leading non-profit, non-governmental research and knowledge institution in Asia and has been consistently ranked among the top 20 think tanks globally. ATREE’s Ecoinformatics group has pioneered cutting-edge spatial, remote sensing and landscape analysis tools to address knowledge gaps in conservation and sustainability science. This includes the first systematic conservation prioritisation of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, new methods to quantify and map biodiversity and ecosystem services, comprehensive studies of climate change effects on tropical mountain systems, and mapping of semi-arid grasslands.

The Ecoinformatics Lab at ATREE seeks a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate. The incumbent will build on ATREE’s strengths in collaboration with its diverse natural and social sciences faculty and lead cutting-edge geospatial analyses that support biodiversity conservation and human well-being.

Responsibilities

  1. Develop and implement cutting-edge spatial analyses and approaches for ATREE’s environmental, ecological, socioeconomic and other datasets.

  2. Oversee and coordinate EIL projects, including by coordinating field teams, to meet reporting obligations and deadlines with donors, project collaborators and partners.

  3. Develop short-term certificate courses and PhD electives in RS-GIS, data sciences and AI tailored to the environmental, ecological and earth sciences.

  4. Work with ATREE and EIL leadership to the lab’s vision, develop strategic partnerships and explore novel research and outreach initiatives.

  5. Support the ATREE Academy by teaching, conducting labs and assisting ATREE faculty and students with geospatial data queries and analyses.

  6. Co-lead the development and maintenance of ATREE’s ecological, environmental and socioeconomic data archive.

  7. Lead or contribute to peer-reviewed publications and other reports produced by the Ecoinformatics Lab, ATREE’s research centres and the Academy.

Qualifications

  1. Doctoral degree in geoinformatics, RS/GIS, data science, life sciences or environmental science with experience (2+ years) in using geospatial information for conservation and sustainability. Applicants with a PhD in life sciences must demonstrate substantial competence in RS-GIS. Applicants with a PhD in geoinformatics, RS-GIS or data science must demonstrate a working knowledge of biodiversity conservation or human wellbeing.

  2. Advanced skills in RS-GIS and data or information sciences across multiple open-source and proprietary platforms with a demonstrated ability to write code in Javascript, Python or R.

  3. Excellent interpersonal skills, including leading a team and working with multiple stakeholders and project collaborators.

  4. Demonstrated ability to write and present information concisely and compellingly and publish peer-reviewed research in internationally recognised journals.

Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Experience in dealing with media and communications for improved data visualisation.

  2. Experience in academic settings, including designing or teaching RS-GIS courses and labs and assisting graduate students with geospatial data analyses.
