Abstract
The talk and demonstration will be under three headings. First the philosophical significance of the plants and the animals will be shown with pictures and demonstrated how they are depicted in dance. Next, their demonstration as described in two important Treatises in Sanskrit “Natyasastra” and “Abinaya Darpana” will be shown through hand gestures and gaits depicting plants and animals. Finally, their depiction in classical dance as described in lyrics of different genre of compositions will be demonstrated. This will be sung and danced and explained selecting different genre of compositions. Some topics covered will include: The beauty of Lotus flower used as simile to describe the eyes, hands and feet of a Gods heroine, hero etc. The different flowers such as white lotus, Jasmine, Mango blossom which are used at the tip of the God of love Cupid’s arrow, causing different sensations like love, infatuation and love sickness in a hero or heroine. The animals like bull and lion, birds like peacock being depicted as vehicles of Gods and Goddesses will be demonstrated. In summary, the talk and the demonstration together will show “The significance of plants and animals in the Indian classical dance”.
