Theatre methods in wetland conservation

One day workshops on puppetry and street play were organized by the ATREE Vembanad team, for the Jalapaadom members at the St. Joseph's GHS, Alappuzha on 1 Aug 2009. The workshops were planned as an effective method to communicate the message of wetland conservation from the Wetland Study Centers to school children and people in the locality. From each school, six students were invited for the street play and two students for the puppetry workshop. The puppetry workshop was led by Smt. D Pushpalatha of the Govt. TTI, Alappuzha, and the street play workshop by Mr. K.R Ramesh, a professional drama director based in Kottayam.

A story called the "Rajeshinte swapnam" (dreams of Rajesh) was presented. The story is about the emotional attachment of Rajesh with a nearby lake named Kingini kayal.

A total of 320 participants representing 36 schools attended the program. Realizing the popularity and effectiveness of the play in communicating the message of wetland conservation, it was decided to present the street play and the puppet shows in all the 36 schools.
