Proposals invited for scoping workshop on canopy research

ATREE, with support from the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN), is organizing a scoping workshop to identify knowledge gaps in forest canopy studies in South Asia. The workshop aims to bring together researchers from various institutions to develop a coordinated proposal for canopy research for the region. The workshop is scheduled for Monday, 6th August 2012 in Bengaluru, ahead of the Society for Conservation Biology Asia Conference ( ) starting on August 6, 2012.

Forest canopy research can provide insights into understanding global‐level processes like climate change. Canopy science provides important interdisciplinary and large‐scale research possibilities such as canopy– atmosphere interactions, structural and functional aspects of canopy on biodiversity, plant animal interaction etc., besides playing a significant role in the maintenance of tropical forest diversity and ecosystem function. Canopies are therefore central to conservation management and resource policy developments in tropical regions. To encourage interdisciplinary, collaborative research on canopies, ATREE invites preliminary (concepts) proposals in areas of biodiversity, ecological function/services, climate change and other canopy related aspects.

Principal Investigators (PIs) of the screened and short-listed proposals will be invited to the scoping workshop that is planned in August 2012, ahead of the Society for Conservation Biology Asia Conference ( ). Based on inputs from the scoping workshop, PIs will be asked to submit a detailed proposal with budget, which will be integrated as a coordinated proposal for MoEF, DST, DBT and other funding agencies.

The preliminary concept note should contain CV of the PI and co-PI, publications in the past 3–4 years; current research activities; statement of scientific problem with specifics (1500 words). About 10 slots are reserved for prospective students in the field of canopy science and submission of concept proposals can be relaxed. Interested persons are requested to send the concept notes by 15th June 2012 to Dr M. Soubadra Devy ( ), Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE), Bengaluru. The shortlisted participants will be intimated latest by 30th June 2012.
