Ph D programme

Rapid economic growth, human population expansion, and subsequent increase in consumption of natural resources have caused unprecedented environmental degradation. Knowledge-based institutions in general have been slow to respond to the complexity of these environmental challenges, and most remain tradition bound, imparting training within narrow boundaries of various disciplines. Even those programmes that are related to environmental disciplines are narrow focused, sector based, and confined to generating rather than applying knowledge. ATREE's doctoral program is designed to train a new breed of environmental leaders who can integrate concepts and ideas of natural and social sciences to strengthen the science behind conservation programs, and at the same time promote sustainable use of natural resources.

ATREE, established in 1996, is fast emerging as one of South Asia's leading conservation and sustainable development research organizations. ATREE's research covers the natural and socio-economic dimensions of the degradation and restoration of biological and other natural resources and the environment at large. Areas of specialization include biodiversity, ecosystem services, agro ecosystems, water management, livelihoods and environmental change, and urban environment. The doctoral programme at ATREE is affiliated to Manipal University (www.manipal.edu).

ATREE fosters diversity and gender equity at the work place and at the Academy. ATREE functions in a decentralised manner and gives students and faculty the independence to pursue their research interests.
