Positions: Investigating factors leading to the emergence of Kyasanur forest disease

The Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) seeks Research Fellows to work on investigating factors leading to the emergence of Kyasanur forest disease along a landuse/landcover gradient in the Western Ghats. The positions are part of a Medical Research Council UK GCRF funded multidisciplinary research project titled " Optimising forest benefits whilst minimising impacts of emerging zoonotic diseases: co-developing an interdisciplinary tool for forests in India".
The following positions are available to Indian Nationals:

1) Senior Research Associate/ Post-Doctoral Research Associate

Responsibilities: The SRA/PDRA will be expected to work on designing the field data collection protocols, the supervision of data collection and management, laboratory analysis, data analysis and writing and coordination of the work of graduate students and project staff.

Qualifications: A Masters with 4+years experience (SRA) or Ph.D. in Veterinary Sciences, Animal Health, Disease Ecology or Wildlife Science or allied fields (PDRA). The applicant should have experience in disease surveillance, animal handling, field sample collection, and laboratory analysis. The applicant should also have a demonstrated ability to conceive, execute, and complete research projects (evidenced by independent peer reviewed publications); Demonstrated abilities to work as part of a team, both as a leader and a member; Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups; Excellent written and oral communications skills.

Familiarity with epidemiological modelling tools, GIS tools, spatial statistics is a plus. Must have a valid driver’s license. Familarity with either Kannada, or Malayalam is a plus.

2) Junior Research Associate (Natural Sciences)

Responsibilities: The JRA will be expected to collect field data, assist in capture and handling of animals, survey and monitoring of animals, data management, analysis and writing.

Qualifications: A Masters degree in Veterinary sciences, Epidemiology, Wildlife Science or allied fields. Must have strong capabilities for field work under difficult conditions, and ability to work as part of a team.

Salaries will commensurate with qualifications and experience. 3) Junior Research Associate (Social Sciences)

Responsibilities: The JRA will be expected to conduct household surveys and interviews with local community members, medical personnel, forest officials and other field personnel in KFD sites in Karnataka and Kerala. The JRF will be expected to assist with the planning and execution of stakeholder workshops and consultations, as well as assist with other components of the KFD project.

Qualifications: A master's degree preferably in the Social Sciences or allied fields. Exceptional candidates with a bachelor's degree will also be considered.The candidate is required to know Malayalam, a working knowledge of Kannada will also be useful. The candidate must have strong capabilities for field work under difficult conditions, and ability to work as part of a team.

All positions will require extensive travelling between field sites in Karnataka and Kerala. The initial appointments for all positions are for 1 year, with the option of renewal contingent on performance. Salaries will be commensurate with experience.
