Towards a Community Conservation Reserve

ATREE-KMTR team supported by IUCN is working towards creating a Community Conservation Reserve (CCR) in wetland which supports a heronry with more than 5000 birds (83 species), roosting here in winter. After the Koonthankulam birds sanctuary, this wetland attracts the largest number of birds during. Local support is vital toward the objective of creating a CCR. As a part of this effort, the ATREE-KMTR team conducted street plays in Nanalkulam, Veerasamuthiram and Malik Nagar, villages which surround the wetland.

These programmes were covered by media and released in local dailies. Following these programmes, Ms. Ramana Saraswathi (Deputy Collector of Tirunelveli District) who visited the Vaagaikulam tank on behalf of District Collector and assured support to creating the CCR.

ATREE and the villagers around Vaagaikulam tank had celebrated 'world wetlands day' on 2 Feb 2010 by having a procession by children adorning the bird masks highlighting the rich biodiversity that the heronary supports. It was flagged off by the Block Development Officer and the Village panchayat leader & members.
