Ph.D research topic: Effects of landscape change and habitat fragmentation on the diversity and distribution of mammals in the northern Eastern Ghats, Andhra Pradesh

Supervisor: Dr.T.Ganesh

Research interests: Tropical forest fragmentation is causing a major decline in the population and distribution of forest fauna across the world. My research interest is focused on studying the effects of forest fragmentation and landscape change on mammal distribution and diversity patterns in tropical forest landscapes. I am also interested in studying the habitat relationships of forest mammals at the landscape and habitat levels. My study area is the northern section of the Eastern Ghats mountain region, spread across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha states. The Eastern Ghats landscape is a treasure trove of biodiversity, supporting 528 tree species from 271 genera belonging to 75 families of flowering plants. The contiguous forests of the Eastern Ghats offer some of the last habitats and prey base for viable populations of forest mammals, due to their relatively isolated nature, diverse habitat types and landscape features. Despite this, the ecology of the region has been very sparsely studied. Through my doctoral research, I am studying the impacts of landscape change on the diversity and distribution patterns of terrestrial, non-volant mammals in the tropical moist deciduous forests of the Papikonda National Park, Andhra Pradesh, and prioritise forest habitats for conservation.
